Local Color by students of Fred Rawlinson

January 4 - February 28. Local Color by students of Fred Rawlinson. Mondays through Saturdays, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Local Color is a collection of student works under the direction of Fred Rawlinson, a well-known local artist and teacher. Atelier artists were given the assignment to paint our hometown...local landmarks. The challenge is to bring each artists' unique vision and technical approach to these familiar everyday images." This show is open to the public and free to view in Fratelli's Café at the Garden.

Local Color

"Atelier artists were given the assignment
to paint our hometown...local landmarks.
The challenge is to bring each artists' unique vision
and technical approach
to these familiar everyday images."

The paintings in this exhibition are “genre” paintings. By genre we mean artworks that reflect everyday life. Visitors to the exhibition, if they are familiar with Memphis everyday life, will recognize these images.

The Atelier artists bring individual visions and techniques in representing the “Memphis Scene”. Architectural and natural realism, in these works, take a back seat to color, shape and form and conveys a more inspirational view of our beautiful hometown.

We sincerely hope you enjoy the exhibition.

Ballet Memphis presents Small Places

THREE WORLD PREMIERES MARKS THE FINALE OF OUR NEWEST ORIGINAL SERIES.

This choreographers’ showcase introduces Stephanie Martinez, an award-winning dance artist and one of the most sought-after dancemakers, to Memphis. Stephanie’s contemporary works have been described as “luminous and intricately conceived, in order to imagine answers to unspoken questions,” a perfect pairing to the thoughtful work from our own dancer Julie Marie Niekrasz and ballet master Brian McSween. Julie’s world premiere from last season, Sa Voix, was so favorably received it is set to tour this season. Now she focuses on intrinsic, close-to-the-heart places where our most important things are stored. Brian, who created the imaginative Pushin’ the Stone for our Pairings world premiere in 2016 will use as his inspiration the Clyde Parke Miniature Circus at the Pink Palace, described as “an unrivaled creation…one man’s hopeful response to the hopelessness” of the Great Depression. From Places in time, and those far out of reach, we now look inward at the great impact even small Places can have in this powerful series finale.

Open Crit

Want to present at Open Crit? There are a few spots left. Contact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org to sign up.

Facilitator: Alex Paulus
Presenting Artist(s): Michael Malone, Natalie Gray, Lexi Perkins

Crosstown Arts’ Open Crit series is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice.

A dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event, which will include up to 4 artists’ work, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each.

All visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged.

No formal preparation is necessary for participating artists, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group, which will always be done in a supportive, constructive and casual environment, but could at the same time be challenging.

Special thanks to Art Center for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist.
